Have you ever heard the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child”? I know many times as a parent during the teenage years we feel this way. There are so many changes going on internally in our child with their minds and bodies, as well as changes that are happening in today’s world with the interconnectedness through social media of our students that we don’t always feel like we have the answers.
In addition to this old saying we believe, as Christians, that prayer works. It says in 1 John 5:14, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” We, here at FBC Enterprise, want to be a church that prays for each other and seek God’s will in our own prayer lives.
Chap Clark, author and Student ministry veteran says, “Here’s the bottom line: every kid needs five adult fans. Any young person who shows any interest in Christ needs a minimum of five people of various ages who will say, ‘I’m going to love that kid until they are fully walking as an adult member of this congregation.’”
We want to help provide those 5 people and see your students connected to other adults in our church. We desire to see the “it takes a village” mentality in our church by empowering adults to pray for and encourage the current generation and their parents. We want to see our student ministry not just be students, parents, and adult leaders but a ministry that the whole church has a part in.
You are probably asking, “How are we going to do this?”
We believe that part of the answer to this is a new initiative that we are rolling out in 2019. It is called the Dugout and is designed to connect our students with adults in the church and vise versa. The adults on our student leadership team and I want to see adults in our church praying and making connections with students and parents that are part of our student ministry. We will facilitate this by asking adults in our church to do three things for the students and their parents that they adopt.
- Pray- We want to ask adults in our church to pray for students and their parents each day
- Kindness- We want the adults that adopt students to come and share a kind word with the students and their parents at church on Sunday or Wednesday
- Encouragement- We want the adult to find some tangible way to encourage you and your students. This could be a birthday card, a note of encouragement, or a gift of their favorite candy when they see them at church.
If you would like your student to participate, you can sign your student up at the following link- https://fbcenterprise.info/dugout-sign-up/
If you are an adult who would like to sign up to adopt a student in prayer, sign up here- https://fbcenterprise.info/sponsor-a-student-for-prayer/
We will be promoting this to the whole church in the coming weeks, so please spread the word. The more adults we can have loving our students, the more the Gospel will spread.
